Hyvaa Vappu!

09:33 I swear Finland has three or more flag days a month… they might as well save time and leave the flags up. All the way from Veteran’s day (today) to a day for Finnish literature and their mythology called Kalevala.

Berlin, Berlin I love you

So I fell in love within a week. Sorry New York you’ve been replaced.

The art I saw: Sammlung Hoffman private collection, Bruce Davidson’s Subway and Arnold Newman Masterclass at C/O Berlin, BAUHAUS DESSAU, Animismus at House of World Cultures in Berlin, Taik Berlin gallery, Pacific Standard Time Los Angeles Art 1945-1980 at Martin-Gropius-Bau, and last but not least the Boros Collection/Bunker Berlin a private collection within a Nazi bunker that also use to be a huge tencho club in the 90’s.

I have to admit it was a little funny to come all the way from America to Germany to look at mostly American art. My favorite thing was the Boros Collection because of the space and that it mostly German artist which we hadn’t seen much of. Each 150 artists that were chosen to display their work out of the 750 pieces the collector owns were told to pick the room in the bunker that they wanted and were given the freedom to display their pieces as they pleased. So the end result there were no curators only the artists. Most of the pieces that were shown were instillations, concept driven and light sculptures. My favorite pieces were the light sculptures because the fact that within a bunker there is no light so they had a lot to manipulated within such a small space. Also this piece where the artist gives the gallerist or in this case the collector a box of things like water jugs, stools, and plastic cups telling them to set it up and asks viewers to simply have a glass of water, sit, talk and then leave their cup where they may in the space and calling the piece “Water” Simply wanting to fill the space with the memory of conversation and time spent together.

The food everywhere was amazing and really cheap. In fact everything was cheap, so many 50 cent beers on the street and so much 1 EUR felafel and kebab.
